Joseph Warfel

Joseph Warfel presented lesson plans based on stochastic allocation and routing models for food bank operations at a summit for administrators and 6th-12th grade STEM teachers. Joseph presented an overview of his research, which focuses on mathematical modelling of food bank programs that pick up donations from grocery stores. Recently, food banks have attempted to include deliveries to shelters, soup kitchens, and food pantries on these routes. This has the potential to reduce costs and improve service, but is challenging because of the randomness of the donations received. Joseph gave examples lesson plans of lesson plans he had developed based on the mathematics underlying his research, including algebraic notation, optimization, graph theory, and algorithms.
